Sonny's Famous Steak Hogies- 1/2 Chicken Hogie, Green Peppers, Onions, and Provolone Cheese with Red Sauce

Jamie says:  Before heading back to Gainesville, Kathryn and I had to satisfy our craving for a Sonny’s “chickensteak” hogie (Sonny’s spells hoagie h-o-g-i-e…wierd, I know) at Sonny’s Famous Steak Hogies in Hollywood (1857 N. 66th Avenue, Hollywood, FL 33024; tel. 954-989-0561).  This hole-in-the-wall restaurant, just recently received some fame by being highlighted on The Food Network and published in our local newspapers (the Sun-Sentinel and the Miami Herald)!  Because we don’t eat red meat, Kathryn and I ask for the steak hogie to be made with chicken.  We load it up with mushrooms, onions, green bell pepper, and provolone cheese; and order the red sauce on the side (to dip the bread in).  The bread is made fresh daily at the restaurant.  We also enjoy the salad, which is served with a hefty portion of Gorgonzola cheese (we also reserve the salad bowl to dip the bread in the dressing).  And I know this may sound silly, but Sonny’s Famous Steak Hogies Restaurant serves THE BEST ice in their beverages (Tijuana Flats takes a close second place).  Although the restaurant is simple, the food and service is great!  (The prices are very reasonable; but it’s cash only.)

Jamie says:  My all-time favorite BBQ restaurant is Scruby’s BBQ (8990 W. State Road 84, Davie, FL 33324; tel. 954-370-2774; additional locations in Pembroke Pines and Tamarac).  When I was younger, I went to the Pembroke Pines location with my family and Grandparents.  We now try to go to the Davie location at least once when we come home from school.  When you walk into the restaurant, the first thing you see is the big open pit grill with meats cooking to perfection; the first thing you smell, is the aroma of quality smoky BBQ.  For some of the best meat, I recommend their baby back ribs ribs, chicken breast, and pulled pork.  They are moist and incredibly flavorful.  On the table, they offer many bottles of BBQ sauces to choose from.  I always top my meat with the sweet BBQ sauce- it is my favorite.  For side dishes, their baked beans, garlic toast, and sweet potato with cinnamon sugar butter are all outstanding.   Although we just went, I can’t wait to go back.

The Lunch Salad Special with Tuna

The Lunch Salad Special with Tuna

Jamie says:  What a lovely surprise!  Kathryn invited me to lunch with our wonderful high school AP English teacher and a couple of her former students (who are also our friends).  We dined at Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza (512 North Pine Island Road, Plantation, FL 33324; tel. 954-474-3311; there are multiple other locations, too) in Plantation, a favorite restaurant for all of us.  Our family usually eats at Anthony’s for dinner, and we order the salad, wings, and pizza.  However, this was my first time for lunch.  The lunch menu was hidden (and not well advertised); after inquiring about it, we found a small menu in the middle of the table that looked like it could have been a wine meun.  Kathryn and I ordered the same meal- the lunch salad special (crispy lettuce dressed with oil and vinegar and topped with chick peas, hard boiled egg, tomatoes, onions, and kalamata olives) and served with two pieces of focaccia bread.  We also added canned tuna for an additional charge.  The lunch food was good (and the company was great), but I would definitely recommend our usual dinner ordering; the salad, pizza, and wings are classic!

Kathryn says: Jamie, Mom and I went for a girls’ lunch out at Himmarshee Bar & Grille (210 SW 2nd Street, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301).

It was absolutely delicious, by far one of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to.  The flavors of the food were so rich and intense.  The price was quite reasonable for the quality.

Pretty much everything on the menu looked good, so we got two appetizers and a salad for starters.

Mom requested an item that is normally on the dinner menu – the stuffed dates.  We ate those first, and it was by far our favorite part of the meal.

Next came the amazing salad.  I loved the crunchy bread crumbs baked onto the goat cheese.

Then came the interesting polenta fries – interesting because I’d never heard of them before.  They were plain, but I dipped them in ketchup.  Puntos for the cool presentation though.

And on to the main courses!
I got a delectable grilled vegetable pizzanini – a cross between a pizza and a panini.  Sliced green squash, red peppers, tomatoes, arugula and goat cheese with balsamic on Focaccia bread.  With thin, crispy, salty garlic chips.  I’m not usually a fan of chips but I couldn’t stop eating these!

Jamie got the tuna burger with cucumber seaweed salad.  Both were very flavorful and full of oriental spice.

Mom got macaroni and cheese with crab and truffle sauce.  Amazing, but a bit rich.

No room for dessert.  Besides, we had it first (those dates)!
